We plant chokeberry correctly

Chokeberry in Russia is often called black chokeberry, but these cultures are not close relatives, they are united only by belonging to the same family - Pink. It is grown everywhere as an ornamental, fruit and medicinal plant. It is not for nothing that the name of the shrub is translated from Greek as help, benefit.

Black chokeberry - beauty and benefit

Black chokeberry is a shrub that grows up to 3 m in height. It is winter-hardy, highly branched, has a superficial root system... Young plants are quite compact, but over time, the crown can grow up to 2 meters or more in diameter. Chokeberry blooms in late spring or early summer with white or pinkish fragrant flowers that attract a large number of insects. Fruits are purple-black with a bluish bloom, ripen in late summer. Chokeberry leaves turn purple-red in September. Against their background, black bunches of berries look beautiful, which are recommended to be picked after the first frost.

Confirmation that the fruits of chokeberry are valuable and useful for the body is their inclusion in the list of medicinal substances by the Ministry of Health.

Chokeberry berries contain a lot of iodine, as well as rutin, which increases the elasticity of blood vessels and slows down the aging process. They are useful for high blood pressure, help accelerate the treatment of nervous and cardiovascular diseases.

The usefulness and beauty of chokeberry are undeniable and testify in favor of its cultivation in garden plots.

If you decide to grow this beautiful and useful plant on your site, then you need to know when, how and where it is preferable to do it.

When to plant chokeberry

There is no definite answer to the question of when it is better to plant chokeberry: in autumn or spring, and there cannot be. It all depends on weather conditions, soil quality, gardener's free time and other factors. Each season has its own pros and cons that must be considered when deciding on planting.

Autumn planting

Autumn is a great time to plant chokeberries. The optimal planting time is from late September to early November. They can be called floating, since you need to take into account the peculiarities of the climatic zone and weather conditions. The main guideline for starting planting is the entry of the plant into a state of biological dormancy, which occurs after the foliage has fallen from the bush. Benefits of autumn planting culture:

  • benefit. In autumn, crop seedlings are more affordable in price and variety of varieties;
  • ease of landing. Autumn planting is not a lot of hassle. After planting, the plant is watered, and then nature takes over;
  • comfort. The plant itself will be dormant, but before the onset of frost it will have time to grow thin absorbent roots. Autumn humidity and temperature conditions are comfortable for this process. In addition, during the winter, the soil around the seedling is compacted, so autumn plantings start to grow much faster than spring ones;
  • saving time. In autumn, gardeners have much less hassle than in spring.

Disadvantages of autumn planting:

  • chokeberry seedlings can be damaged by severe winter frosts, especially in the northern regions;
  • besides frosts, winter threatens the seedlings with other troubles: icing, strong winds, snowfalls. They can break a young plant;
  • In late autumn and early winter, rodents become more active, which can damage the roots of seedlings.

Spring planting

The plant tolerates spring planting well. The main thing is to carry it out in compliance with all the features of the procedure and early enough - until the end of April. Spring planting has its positive and negative aspects. The advantages of planting chokeberry in the spring include the following:

  • in the spring, when the planning of plantings for the current year is in progress, you can prepare planting pits in advance, since the site is practically free of other plants, there is no need to wait for the harvest and the release of the planned site;
  • although the plant will later start growing, it has a whole season ahead of it for the growing season, which means that the next summer you can get a harvest. If you postpone planting until autumn, then the fruiting of the culture will shift by a whole season.

Cons of spring planting of chokeberry seedlings:

  • increased attention and care. A spring seedling needs to be watered regularly, especially if the spring is windy and dry;
  • lack of good planting material;
  • in spring, there is much more work in the garden and in the garden than in September - October: soil preparation, growing seedlings and caring for it, sowing vegetables and other important activities.

Where to plant chokeberry

Chokeberry is a perennial plant, it can grow and bear fruit perfectly in one place for up to 30 years, therefore, the choice of a site for planting should be approached with all responsibility.

The best precursors for chokeberry are perennial grasses and green manure.

Chokeberry is undemanding to soil. The plant is preferably planted on moist loamy soils with neutral acidity. But at the same time, it will grow normally on soils with high acidity, previously treated with dolomite flour or lime, as well as on sandy loam. Aronia does not suffer from the close occurrence of groundwater, since it has a surface root system located at least half a meter from the surface. Chokeberry grows poorly only on highly saline soils. However, in areas with insufficient moisture, chokeberry berries can be small and dry.

For excellent flowering and fruit abundance, the culture requires good illumination. With strong shading, including internal shading, the shrub will stretch excessively upward. Aronia coexists well with garden and horticultural crops.

It is not recommended to plant chokeberry near cherries, as these plants have common pests: slimy sawfly and aphids.

Chokeberry is often used for the organization of hedges, as well as for group plantings. The grafted chokeberry can be formed in the shape of a ball and will serve as an original decoration of the site if you use mountain ash or hawthorn as a stem.

The chokeberry hedge has an excellent appearance, a dense crown, short stature and ease of pruning and caring for it

Landing rules

The method of carrying out the autumn and spring planting of the culture is identical. When planting chokeberry, it is important to have healthy seedlings. When choosing them, first of all, it is necessary to take into account the state of the root system.

Dryness, chapped roots signal that the plant will not take root well, hurt for a long time.

If there is a need to transport seedlings, then they must be carefully covered, protected from drying and freezing. Immediately before planting, it is recommended to inspect the seedling, remove dried and damaged roots and shoots, and then dip the root system in a mess of clay, water and manure.

Planting is best done in the evening in cloudy weather. Planting holes should be about half a meter in diameter and depth. If you are planting several plants, then you should make sure that the feeding area for each is approximately 2x3 meters. The soil mixture for backfilling the seedling includes the following elements:

  • topsoil and humus (1: 2);
  • superphosphate (150 g);
  • wood ash (300 g).

The process of planting chokeberry includes the following steps:

  1. The prepared mixture is filled with a third of the planting pit.
  2. Fertile soil is added, filling the hole to half its volume.
  3. Water using at least 10 liters of water.

    Before planting a seedling, the soil in the planting pit is watered

  4. The seedling is placed in the center of the planting pit, making sure that the root collar is buried no more than 2 cm.
  5. The roots are carefully straightened.
  6. The pit is filled with the remaining soil mixture and fertile soil.
  7. Tamp it tightly.

    When planting a shrub, the root collar is buried into the ground by a maximum of 1.5-2 cm and the soil is tamped tightly

  8. Pour with a bucket of water.
  9. Mulch the ground around the seedling. As mulch, you can use straw, peat, sawdust.

If the seedlings had a well-developed root system, then the aerial part of the plant after planting can not be cut off. Otherwise, it is recommended to cut the shoots by shortening them to 15–20 cm and making sure that there are several healthy buds on them.

Sometimes on the site it becomes necessary to transplant an adult chokeberry bush to a new place. It is better to do this in early spring, before active sap flow has begun. If you can do without dividing the bush, then it is optimal to transplant with a lump of earth.

  1. Around the bush, they dig a trench 25 cm wide and about 50 cm deep.
  2. With a crowbar or shovels, they lift the roots along with a lump of earth, straighten them from their place.

    When transplanting an adult plant, it is dug up and carefully dragged along with a clod of earth to a new place.

  3. They drag the bush along with the ground onto burlap, a sheet of metal or dense cellophane and transport it to a new place. In this case, it is preferable to keep the orientation of the bush to the cardinal points.
  4. A bush is placed in the prepared planting hole, watered and buried with fertile soil.

If desired, an adult plant can be divided into several parts. In this case, you should slightly clean the root system from the soil, then divide the bush with an ax or other sharp tool. Each division should contain young healthy roots and several strong shoots. Places of cuts are sprinkled with charcoal. Then each part is planted in its intended place.

In the spring, before the start of sap flow, a chokeberry bush is dug out, all old branches are removed from it, the root system is cleaned of soil and, if necessary, is divided into parts

After transplanting the bush, it is necessary to inspect, cut off old, dry branches, smearing the cuts with charcoal. This procedure helps to rejuvenate the chokeberry and reduce the load on the root system that takes root.

Experienced gardeners note that chokeberry transplant is painless and gives a good harvest next season.

Black chokeberry (mountain ash)

Chokeberry (Aronia melanocarpa) is also called black chokeberry. This fruit tree or shrub is a representative of the aronia species of the pink family. Its name comes from the Greek word that translates as "benefit, help." The homeland of this plant is the eastern region of North America, it prefers to grow on lake and river banks. In North America, about 20 species of chokeberry are found in nature. Earlier in Europe, such a plant was cultivated exclusively as an ornamental plant. However, in the 19th century Michurin noticed the unpretentiousness of the chokeberry and its suitability for breeding. As a result, today it is grown in almost all countries. The second name of such a plant is chokeberry, but they are almost nothing like ordinary mountain ash. The only similarity between these plants is that they are members of the same family - pink.

Planting chokeberry at their summer cottage: step by step instructions

Growing chokeberry does not cause any particular difficulties. She gives stable high yields. For planting chokeberry plantations, it is necessary to select the appropriate places. The best is on medium, water-capacious, fertile loams. Slightly lowered areas of the relief are more suitable for this culture. In more elevated dry places, the berries are smaller and less juicy. Aronia reacts poorly to lack of moisture, especially during fruit ripening.

This mountain ash should not be planted near swamps, in low places where late spring frosts are possible. The shrub is also demanding for illumination, even minimal shading significantly reduces the yield. And heavily shaded bushes bear fruit several times worse than those that grow in the sun.

Throughout his life, the author of these lines observed three bushes of chokeberry, growing in radically different conditions. As a child, a huge bush grew in partial shade, but it was in the west of the Bryansk region, with a not very hot and rather humid climate. The yields were huge and stable. Then, in his youth, there was a bush in the country in the Saratov region. It was well lit, but frequent summer droughts and unbearable heat allowed for a much more modest harvest than in the more northern Bryansk region. Now neighbors in another dacha (also Saratov) have a black chokeberry bush growing in the shade and without much care. He also bears fruit normally, but even less than the second one for which the sun was enough.

It is better to plant rowan in autumn, but you can also in spring. When preparing the site, half a bucket of rotted manure per square meter is introduced into the soil. When planting several bushes, the optimal scheme is 3 x 3 m. A planting pit is preliminarily prepared: width 60 cm, depth 40 cm. Humus or peat-manure compost (1.5–2 buckets) and two liters of wood ash are introduced into it, after mixing everything with the soil taken out of the pit.

The roots of the seedling are slightly pruned, dipped in a mash made of clay, mullein and water. Planting is similar to planting most garden plants. It is necessary to lower the seedling into the prepared hole, spread the roots well, gradually cover them with soil and water. Aronia is planted 5–6 cm deeper than the seedling grew in the nursery. In the spring, the bush is cut off strongly.

Thus, in order to plant a chokeberry in the country, you need to do the following:

    In the summer we choose a place: sunny, but not too dry.

It is advisable to plant chokeberry away from other shrubs and trees.

The planting hole for the bush should not be very deep, but it must be filled with fertilizers

A good seedling should have a strong root lobe

If the roots are dipped in a chatterbox, the seedling will take root easier.

After backfilling with earth, the root collar must be completely immersed in the soil.

After planting and watering, you need to throw a little peat or other mulching material around the bush.

Unfortunately, in the spring the shoots will have to be greatly shortened.

In the first four years, the aisles can be occupied with potatoes, lupines for green manure or strawberries. This use of the place is advisable, since chokeberry begins to bear fruit only in the third year after planting the bushes, and during this time, next to it, you can get harvests of other crops, applying additional fertilizers under them.

As for trees and shrubs, it is better not to plant anything like this nearby, hawthorn is especially bad as a neighbor. Of course, such giants as apricots and, especially, walnuts, are completely unacceptable: from their neighborhood, the chokeberry will have no food or moisture.Chokeberry has common pests with cherries: slimy sawfly and aphids, so it is absolutely impossible to plant them next to each other.

Reviews of gardeners about planting

In the spring, after my requests, a neighbor brutally tried to chop off a piece of blackberry, but after fruitless attempts she gave up and allowed me to. The blackberry is exactly 30 years old, I dug a bush with practically no roots, I planted two broken off processes with normal roots in my hedge, they did not even notice the transplants, but I stuck a piece of an old bush on the street near the fence, it dried to death, as it seemed to me, well I did not water there, I tied the helenium to it so that it would not fall apart, I decided to wait until spring with the final decision, and now that dried blackberry has released new leaves. In my opinion, the chokeberry is from the series “you can't strangle this song, you can't kill it”.

Chokeberry is very unpretentious. When building a dacha, I planted it along the road near the site. Almost into rubble. Sand in half with rubble. I dug a very shallow groove, sprinkled it with earth and the whole blackberry grew. After 5-6 years (last year) a fire water supply was laid along the road and my blackberry was cut down by the roots. In the spring of this year, she again gave shoots even thicker than before.

A properly planted chokeberry will harmoniously fit into your garden plot, and its exquisite beauty will be complemented by the beneficial qualities of the berries of this unpretentious plant.
