Hello, dear friends - summer residents and gardeners!
Since the time is coming for sowing seeds for seedlings, I want to tell you about one effective and simple method of disinfecting seed, which was used by our grandmothers, but for some reason we forgot about.

Method advantages

I have already said more than once how important it is to disinfect the seeds before sowing. Seed disinfection is the first step towards healthy and robust seedlings. During this process, pathogenic microbes that can remain on the seed shells are destroyed.

There are many ways and means of preparing seeds for sowing, but today I want to offer you an old and effective method of disinfection in hot water. Thus, you can sterilize any seeds, but it is especially productive for the treatment of pumpkin seeds - cucumbers, zucchini, pumpkins and squash, and here's why:

  • firstly, under unfavorable conditions, these crops are more often than others affected by fungal diseases and, having fallen ill, they sharply reduce their productivity, and sometimes even refuse to bear fruit;
  • secondly, when sowing seeds of pumpkin plants the next year after harvest, they form mainly male flowers and, accordingly, form very few ovaries, and pumpkin seeds give a good harvest only after two to three years of storage, therefore, to speed up the aging process of the seed material, it is recommended to warm it well.

But in order to prevent fungal diseases, this method can be used for all types of seeds. I treated several varieties of tomato seeds with hot water, and they began to sprout already on the third day after sowing.

Warming up seeds before sowing

To disinfect and warm the seeds, you need a small thermos and water at a temperature of 50-60 ⁰C. Pour the seeds into a thermos, fill them with hot water, close the thermos with a lid and wrap it in a towel for 30-40 minutes. Then fold the contents of the thermos onto a sieve, dry the seeds until they are loose and sow.

To process the seeds of several crops or varieties at a time, before placing them in a thermos, wrap each species or variety in cloth or gauze and put in a thermos, and after the expiration date, remove the bags, squeeze them slightly and place them in a plastic bag for germination.

Manganese is an essential element for plant nutrition. If this component is not enough in the soil, the plants will decrease immunity and yield. Feeding with potassium permanganate is enough to perform once a season.

Blackleg is a dangerous fungal disease that affects young plants.

For some summer residents, after its appearance, it is easier to get rid of seedlings and plant a new one. However, a solution of potassium permanganate allows you to cope with this pest in a short time. The main thing is to perform 2-3 treatments.

Why is disinfection carried out?

Every year more and more pathogenic microorganisms accumulate in the soil and its yield is deteriorating. Therefore, it is optimal to carry out a complete soil replacement every year. However, new soil, even purchased from a store, may contain various pests. What to do in this case?

If it is not possible to change the soil, it must be cleaned of organic residues and thoroughly disinfected. It should be noted that disinfection is recommended despite the replacement of the ground. This approach will help you avoid unpleasant surprises in the future.

Acceleration of seed germination

Before sowing vegetable seeds, they are soaked in a solution of one of the growth stimulants to accelerate their germination and increase disease resistance. For this, Epin, Gumat, Novosil, Energen, Zircon and other biological stimulants are used. Please ask for instructions on their use when purchasing these products.

Attention! Treatment of seeds with growth stimulants is carried out at temperatures above 20 0 C. At lower temperatures, their effectiveness drops sharply.

Natural stimulants

Many gardeners use natural stimulants:

  1. Honey water. Vegetable seeds are wrapped in a piece of cotton cloth soaked in honey water (1 teaspoon of flower honey per 1 liter of melt water) and left for a day.
  2. Raw yeast. Dissolve 25 g in 0.5 l of melt water, moisten a piece of gauze or other cloth in the prepared solution, wrap the seeds in it and leave to swell. Then, without washing, they are planted.
  3. Wood ash. In 1 liter of water, dissolve 20 g of ash, insist for two days, stirring occasionally. The infusion is carefully drained, a piece of gauze is soaked in it, in which the seeds are wrapped for 4 hours.

The seeds of some plants sprout hard due to the fact that their shell is too dense. This applies, for example, beans, pumpkins, squash, beans, etc. In order for them to sprout faster, it is necessary to carefully split the spouts of the seeds with scissors. When soaked, water quickly penetrates into the seed and germination time is greatly reduced.

Disinfection of seeds

Regardless of whether tomato seeds were purchased or harvested independently, harmful microbes and spores of a pathogenic fungus may exist on their surface. They can cause a variety of plant diseases and negatively affect the growth, fruiting volume of tomatoes and the quality of vegetables. Early wilting and death of tomatoes in some cases can also be the result of the action of parasites, the larvae of which were located on the surface of the tomato seed even before the seeds were sown in the ground. It is possible to remove larvae and bacteria that are not visible to the eye by processing the planting material. The most common methods for disinfecting tomato grains are given below.

Use of potassium permanganate

A solution of potassium permanganate is most often used to disinfect tomato grains before sowing for seedlings. The method consists in preparing a manganese 1% solution (1 mg per 1 liter of water). In the prepared light pink liquid, it is necessary to place the tomato grains for 15 minutes. After soaking, the seed must be thoroughly rinsed with water and soaked for further germination or dried for short storage.

Hydrogen peroxide

Unlike potassium permanganate, hydrogen peroxide not only disinfects tomato seeds, but also accelerates the process of their germination. It is worth noting that experienced housewives recommend various ways to use this substance. So, just before sowing, tomato seeds can be soaked for 20 minutes in a 3% hydrogen peroxide solution. Such a measure does not take much time and does not cause much trouble.

Hydrogen peroxide can also be used for long-term soaking and germination. So, a substance in a concentration of 6% should be diluted with water in a ratio of 1:10. It is necessary to place tomato seeds in the resulting liquid for 3 days.


Specialized agronomic stores offer a range of products for disinfecting tomato seeds. Among them there are chemicals that are undesirable to use, since they are implanted into the planting material and are subsequently partially contained in vegetables. An alternative to such "harmful" substances are biological products, which are absolutely harmless to humans and at the same time effective in the fight against the causative agents of most diseases.


The substance is a microbiological preparation that can be used to disinfect tomato seeds. Phytosporin can be used at various ambient temperatures, for example, during seed hardening. The drug is not toxic, it can be used in an apartment.

Fitosporin is produced in the form of a paste, powder, liquid. For disinfection of tomato grains, depending on the form of the preparation, the following instructions should be followed:

  • half a teaspoon of powder must be diluted in 100 g of water. In the resulting solution, the seeds are soaked for 2 hours immediately before planting.
  • the paste contains an increased concentration of substances, therefore it is used in the ratio of 2 drops to half a glass of water. Seed soaking time 2 hours
  • liquid phytosporin is offered to the consumer in ready-made and concentrated form. The concentrated substance is diluted in a ratio of 10 drops per glass of water. It is not necessary to dilute the finished solution.

This harmless biological product can be used at different stages of plant growth, including in the process of flowering and fruit formation. Protection extends not only to the aboveground green part of the plant, but also to its root system.

Baikal EM

This drug contains a lot of beneficial bacteria and microelements that "survive" pathogenic pests. Baikal EM contains lactic acid, nitrogen-fixing, photosynthetic bacteria and yeast. Such a complex allows you to disinfect tomato seeds and saturate them with nutrients for the subsequent successful growth and fruiting of tomatoes.

"Baikal EM" is a highly concentrated liquid that must be diluted 2 hours before use in water in a ratio of 1: 1000. So, in a liter jar of water, add 3 ml of the substance. To activate the reproduction of bacteria, it is recommended to add a teaspoon of sugar, molasses or honey to the solution. Tomato seeds can be soaked in the solution for germination. Such a measure will remove the larvae of pests from the surface of the seeds and saturate the tomato grains with nutrients. "Baikal EM" can be used to protect tomatoes from pests at all stages of the growing season.

Experts in the vegetable growing industry recommend disinfecting the seeds of any vegetable crops before germination or sowing in the ground. This allows you to prevent the negative impact of pests at the earliest stage of cultivation. The choice of disinfection method always depends solely on the preferences of the farmer. Seed treatment before sowing

Seed treatment with hydrogen peroxide is not a completely new, but rather promising method of disinfecting and preparing seed material for sowing, especially in the absence of potassium permanganate, which is familiar to us, on sale. At the same time, hydrogen peroxide increases the sowing qualities of seeds, plant immunity, growth and development rates, and increases the yield.

To improve the sowing qualities and stimulate germination, the seeds are soaked in a 0.4% solution of hydrogen peroxide for 12 hours, and difficult to germinate, for example, beet and parsley seeds, for 24 hours.

For disinfection, the seed is treated in a 10% solution of hydrogen peroxide for 20 minutes at a ratio of the mass of seeds to the solution of 1: 1. Then the seeds are washed with water and dried to the flowability required for sowing.

Soaking seeds in a 0.4% solution of hydrogen peroxide increases the germination energy, accelerates the emergence of seedlings by 2-4 days, increases productivity, and helps to reduce the content of nitrates in products. Treatment of seed with 10% hydrogen peroxide solution reduces the contamination of seeds with pathogens.

Don't be lazy! Treat and disinfect the seeds before sowing with hydrogen peroxide, and the result will not be long in coming.

Seed treatment consists of several stages. Let's dwell on the most significant ones - disinfection and soaking in biostimulants.

We fight infections of different origins

Often, gardeners blame the poor harvest on the weather, poor soil or an invasion of malicious pests and do not even assume that the crop failure is a consequence of the impact of pathogenic microflora. That is why when sowing seeds for seedlings, do not forget about disinfection.

Soaking seeds in potassium permanganate is a popular and effective method of fighting microbes. Perhaps each of you is familiar with the disinfection of seeds in a solution of potassium permanganate. Important! A 1-2% solution is prepared for disinfection. To get it 1 g. the chemical is diluted in 100 gr. warm water. When there are a lot of seeds, you can combine 1 tsp. preparation with 3 glasses of water.

Simple seed treatment helps to successfully accomplish several tasks:

  • reject garbage
  • increase plant immunity
  • prevent the development of diseases.

However, potassium permanganate is unable to overcome the ubiquitous black leg. To prevent the spread of soft rot, you will have to use other means.

In addition to these drugs, Albit, Baktofit, Bisolbi Sun and Sporobacterin have shown high efficiency in the fight against bacterial and fungal infections. The treated seeds are reliably protected from damage by the black leg, which can destroy the plant in a matter of hours.

Increasing the chances of a bountiful harvest

Growth stimulants work wonders! Biological products significantly increase not only the quantity, but also the quality of seedlings.

Biostimulants are divided into 2 groups:

  • industrial - Ecosil, Epin, Zircon, Humate, Kornevin, Immunocytophyte
  • natural - melt water, aloe juice, honey solution.

When diluting chemical stimulants, follow the instructions. Seed processing times vary from 30 minutes to 18 hours.
