Growing chard and asparagus at their summer cottage

Like every gardener, I love to grow something new in the garden, which the neighbors do not have. Many years ago, they brought me tarragon seeds from the Caucasus. He took root in our garden immediately and forever. I distributed a lot of it to neighbors. At first, they were used mainly for canning. Now tarragon goes into soups and salads, and we dry this wonderful herb.

Last season from my hands began to advance in gardening chard... I grow two varieties - green silver peel and red. There is also yellow, but I did not find its seeds on sale.

Chard bushes are powerful, up to 60 cm tall, they are very decorative. Chard beds are more like a flower bed, very elegant.

We use Swiss chard instead of cabbage in the soup, just stew with butter and the addition of herbs, preserve the stalks separately for the winter and make a dressing for borscht from the leaves.

And you can also make a wonderful Georgian dish from it - phali... Chard should be finely chopped with a knife and simmered in a pan under the lid. Finely chop an equal amount of onions equal to chard and sauté under the lid until soft. Combine onions and chard, mix well, add garlic, vinegar, suneli hops, red pepper, cilantro or basil to taste. For a festive table, chopped walnuts can be added to the dish. Well, if you don't have chard, you can use spinach or beet tops.

For chard, fertile soils are needed, well-drained, with a neutral reaction, and sufficiently moist. It is better to take a sunny place. It takes out a lot of nutrients from the soil, so it is necessary often - once every 10 days - to feed it with manure infusion or infusion of green herbs. Good watering is needed. Then Swiss chard will thank you with an excellent and beautiful harvest.

And bon appetit!

And one more undoubted success of the last season is the first camp. asparagus... Almost everyone grows it, but just as an ornamental plant. And to get a delicious, delicious, dietary harvest, you need to work a little while planting.

Sow with seeds from mid-May (germinated) or seedlings in early June, when the threat of frost has passed. The bed should be with nutritious soil, sufficiently moist, but without stagnant water. It is better to cover weak young plants for the winter with peat, compost or old sawdust.

While the asparagus is growing, we are preparing a place for it to grow constantly. We dig a trench with a width and depth of about 0.5 m. At the bottom we put all the waste of garden production: old branches, weeds with a layer of 20 cm. We compact it all well, and put a layer of compost with well-rotted manure on top. Asparagus will produce crops in one location for about ten years. Therefore, the soil must be very fertile and neutral. This means that you need to add dolomite flour or lime. Over the course of a year, the weeds in the trench will rot a little, and the soil will settle somewhat.

In the spring, overwintered young bushes are planted in a permanent place in one row no closer than 0.7 m from each other. For each plant, you can add a teaspoon of AVA and mix well with the ground. Prepare a good, loose compost by autumn. It can be a mixture of old sawdust, rotting manure very well. The mixture should pass water and air well.

In the fall, the asparagus beds are covered with this mixture from the point of growth with a layer of 15-20 cm. In subsequent years, the layer is increased to 25 cm. Harvesting begins in the third year. As soon as the ground over the asparagus begins to crack, it should be gently raked out with your hands and broken off any young, bleached shoots. The soil from above must be leveled. In the early years, in order not to weaken the plant, it is better to carry out one collection.

The resulting shoots can be used fresh in salads or canned. You can boil it (put it in a saucepan upright!) And use it as a delicious side dish for a variety of dishes or as an independent dish.

You can also collect green shoots. They are even richer in vitamin C. But bleached shoots are tastier.

How is asparagus good for you? It lowers blood pressure, normalizes heart function, and has a positive effect on all organs of the body. Abroad, it is the No. 1 dietary vegetable and very expensive. So maybe it's worth a little work in order to get a harvest from a beautiful flower bed?

Enjoy your meal and good health for years to come.

The second method of planting seedlings is by germinating seeds in pots. This procedure differs from the first method only in the nature of the sowing. Experience shows that when planting a culture such as asparagus cultivation seedlings in this way significantly accelerate the growth of shoots and help save time - from two weeks to a month. The seeds are prepared as indicated in the first case: they are pre-soaked and germinated. Sowing seeds is done in early or mid-May. To do this, use small pots or seedling cassettes. The soil is prepared as follows: the soil is mixed with manure, sand and peat in proportions of 2: 1: 1: 1. Before planting, you need to select seeds with small roots and carefully place them in the soil. Seedling care consists in watering, providing good light and periodically loosening the soil. In addition, young plants should be gradually hardened.

At the beginning of summer, seedlings from pots are transplanted into open ground. Plants planted in this way develop more rapidly and tolerate cold better. And although when planting such a vegetable crop as asparagus growing from seed seedlings require some tricks, yet the result is worth the effort.

When we dreamily sort out bright bags of seeds in our hands, we sometimes subconsciously believe that we have a prototype of a future plant. We mentally allocate a place for him in the flower garden and look forward to the cherished day of the appearance of the first bud. However, buying seeds does not always guarantee that you will end up with the desired flower. I would like to draw your attention to the reasons due to which the seeds may not sprout or die at the very beginning of germination.

All summer residents are concerned about the question of how to grow healthy seedlings in early spring. It seems that there are no secrets here - the main thing for fast and strong seedlings is to provide them with warmth, moisture and light. But in practice, in the conditions of a city apartment or a private house, this is not so easy to do. Of course, every experienced gardener has his own proven method of growing seedlings. But today we will talk about a relatively new assistant in this matter - a propagator.

The Sanka tomato variety is one of the most demanded in Russia. Why? The answer is simple. He is the very first to bear fruit in the garden. Tomatoes ripen when other varieties have not even faded yet. Of course, if you follow the growing recommendations and make an effort, even a novice grower will receive a rich harvest and joy from the process. And so that the efforts are not in vain, we advise you to plant quality seeds. For example, such as seeds from TM "Agroupech".

Asparagus is a very healthy and tasty early ripening plant. Already in mid-April, you can feast on its first fruits. Since the crop is usually small and the shelf life is short, the crop is considered relatively expensive. Asparagus grows in almost all European countries, since it has not only beneficial nutritional properties, but also is a remedy for many diseases. If desired, it can be grown on the site on its own, taking into account all the recommendations for care and maintenance.

Asparagus is available in nearly a hundred different species and hybrid varieties, including herbaceous plants, shrubs and dwarf shrubs. Only the tender upper part of the plant is used for food and is considered a special delicacy. The surface of the shoot is covered with tightly pressed leaves, similar to small scales, which gather at the base into one bundle. Their height can reach 50 centimeters.

When choosing a variety of asparagus for growing in a summer cottage, it is recommended to pay attention to frost resistance, yield and resistance to pests and diseases. For example, the male species of this crop have thicker stems, produce large yields, but do not produce seeds. In the female varieties, the stems are softer and thinner, and the yields are much more plentiful.

Growing asparagus shoots requires loose and fertile soil, possibly with a high percentage of sand. The plant develops well when the spring warmth (more than 10 degrees), at summer temperatures - up to 30 degrees, but small night frosts in spring can destroy the culture. The plant gives the first useful and nutritious shoots in late June - early July.

Asparagus is a versatile plant, it can be used not only for nutrition, but also for decorative purposes. Thin green twigs with berries - orange - red beads decorate flower arrangements and festive bouquets. And young asparagus shoots, which are just sprouting from the ground, the most valuable in composition and taste, can be baked on the grill or in the oven, steamed and eaten raw.

The appearance of young shoots differs in color depending on the cultivar. Fruits, which contain a large amount of fiber, vitamins and minerals, are purple, green and white.

Those who have been growing asparagus for more than one year already harvest high yields with ease, but for inexperienced gardeners, the process of caring for a plant may seem difficult. In fact, you just need to learn all the intricacies of the growing process and the basic rules of care, and even a beginner will succeed.

It is very important to choose and properly prepare a land plot for culture. The size of the plot should be large, carefully dug up and fertilized for asparagus. For each square meter of soil during autumn planting, a top dressing is applied, consisting of superphosphate (50 grams), potassium sulfate (30 grams) and ammonium sulfate (15 grams). When planting in spring, only humus is introduced into the soil in the amount of 10 kilograms per square meter. It is recommended to use with caution any other top dressing that can cause burns to the root of the plants.

For spring planting of asparagus roots, shallow trenches are used, which will be convenient for watering. And planting in autumn is distinguished by high mounds near each seedling, which will further protect the plants and their root system from the winter cold.

The active development of young plants and the first harvest will begin only next year. It is recommended to leave the first shoots uncut. Caring for the plant in the first and subsequent years consists in the timely loosening of the soil, weeding the beds from weeds, irrigation in the correct amounts of water and the introduction of fertilizers necessary for each period of development.

In order for the root part to develop fully, and future fruits to be of high quality, it is necessary to properly water the plant throughout the entire growing period. The volume of irrigation water is moderate, and the irrigation is regular. An excess or lack of moisture in the soil should not be allowed.

Loosening and weeding of the soil

It is necessary to loosen the asparagus beds after each watering, after the irrigation water is completely absorbed. Weeds are weeded as soon as they appear on the site, but must be timely.

The first feeding of asparagus is recommended only three weeks after planting with liquid mullein infusion. To prepare it, you need one part mullein and five parts water. After another three weeks - the second feeding, consisting of the infusion of chicken droppings. Its composition: one part of droppings and ten parts of water. The third and last top dressing is in the autumn in the form of complex fertilizers.

The seed propagation method is considered ineffective due to the very low germination of seeds, therefore it is used in rare cases. With a great desire, perseverance and strict adherence to all instructions and recommendations, you can still get a rich harvest in this way.

Before planting, asparagus seeds must be kept in a disinfecting solution of potassium permanganate for several hours, after which they should be planted in moistened small sawdust. These conditions are ideal for young seedlings and their fragile emerging roots. 15-20 days after the emergence of sprouts, the plants can be transplanted into peat pots to a depth of 1.5-2 centimeters. The composition of the soil mixture in containers: manure, peat and sand (one part each) and earth (two parts). Seedlings are planted on open beds in the middle of summer.

Diseases and pests

Asparagus is quite resistant to diseases and pests, but sometimes they cannot be avoided:

  • Red rot, also called root rot... The disease affects the root collar and roots, leading to their death and the withering away of the aboveground part of the culture. If a problem is detected in a timely manner, then Fundazol can be used. The treated area must be covered with a thick plastic wrap. If the disease has spread, then the entire planting will have to be destroyed.
  • Rust... This disease affects the asparagus shoots and usually develops in June. It is revealed by darkening of the stems and the appearance of wounds. In this case, spray fungicides should be used.
  • Asparagus leaf beetle... This problem usually occurs in July. Small bugs are black and yellow, there is a red stripe on the blue wings, and the larvae are black. They feed on asparagus foliage and tender parts of the plant. It is necessary to fight them with insecticides - Fufanon, Fitoverm, Aktellik.
  • Asparagus fly... This insect can be recognized by its brown body, yellow head and legs. It infects shoots by laying eggs in them. The larvae cause twisting and wilting of the stems. It is necessary to fight the pest with insecticides. Remove and burn the affected plant parts.

The fight against pests and diseases must be started in advance, resorting to preventive measures. It is imperative to inspect the plantings every week in order to timely identify the problem and solve it without excessive losses.
