What is the difference between wild and garden blueberries, and why is the latter worth growing on the site

Tasty and healthy blueberries, thanks to their taste and useful properties, have already found their way to the hearts of the inhabitants of the North and Central Russia. And now, in addition to wild berries, you can also enjoy garden varieties that have appeared on our shelves. Let's find out what are the main differences between wild and cultivated garden blueberries.

The appearance of the bushes

Usually wild bushes are about half a meter high, although they can be more powerful. But the garden version of blueberry is famous for its growth, shoots can reach 2 meters in height, they are branchy and actively grow. Thanks to these qualities, the plant will make an excellent hedge.

Berry flavor and size

Wild berries are much smaller than garden berries. However, according to experts, fruits grown in natural conditions are much tastier and more aromatic. When breeding horticultural crops, attention was paid to keeping quality during transportation, size of berries and presentation. Therefore, garden blueberry juice may appear slightly watery. But, despite this, it contains the same trace elements and has a healing effect on the body.

Yield

In a natural environment, the yield is about 200 grams per plant. But garden brothers are much more productive. The harvest per bush is several kilograms. Successful gardeners can boast of a record harvest of eight kilograms per bush. Of course, such a result is possible only with strict adherence to the rules of plant care.

Age of first fruiting

Wild blueberries begin to bear fruit at the age of 11-18. For summer cottage cultivation, such terms are very long, so experts have bred varieties with earlier fruiting. Now you can eat berries in three years after planting. But in order to reap a significant harvest, you need to wait a couple more years.

Demanding care

Both wild and garden blueberries will thrive in a quiet corner of the garden, preferably on the south side. The plant must be protected from frost. Water carefully and in moderation, prune the bushes in early spring. According to summer residents, cultivated blueberries are not as capricious as those taken from nature. Therefore, it is possible and necessary to grow a berry. Juices, preserves and mousses made from this healthy berry will delight your family and friends and will certainly justify the time and effort spent.

How the townspeople moved to the village

At the moment when Daria met Anton, she lived with children in Minsk. First I rented a house, then I invested in two rooms in a three-room apartment. Looking back, the interlocutor says that it was an unfortunate decision: the owner did not agree to sell the third room, property prices fell. There was not enough money for a full-fledged apartment in the city, so it was decided to look for an option outside the city. I found a small house in a resort area near the Minsk Sea - the village of Semkov Gorodok.

In general, the land here is quite expensive, the spouses say, but they managed to buy a house with a plot of 10 acres for only 40 thousand dollars. It turned out inexpensively, because the house is divided into two parts, and neighbors live behind the wall. Likewise with land - two plots are located side by side.

The house was initially in poor condition and very small - in fact, a room and a half. I didn't want to live in cramped conditions, so the family decided to make an extension so that everyone would have their own room. Together with the repair, all the work cost about 30 thousand dollars more. And, of course, a lot of time had to be spent on the construction site.

- To be honest, I remember life at a construction site with horror, - admits Daria, warning those who dream of their own home. - Constantly some jambs got out, they had to be solved, and even then I was working in the office, it was all difficult to combine. Anton here was generally for the foreman.

- We dug a hole for the sewer, all the fences, the outbuilding, the tiles - we did everything ourselves, there was only green grass in the yard, - says Anton. He is just one of those who are not afraid of work. And he believes that life outside the city will be a pleasure for those who are not too lazy to fuss around the house every day. His pedometer has about 15-20 thousand steps per day.

The best northern tall varieties

Most often, blueberries can be seen in the gardens of the Moscow region and other regions of central Russia:

  • Bluecrop. This medium-fruiting variety attracts gardeners primarily with its drought resistance, frost resistance and productivity. In addition, it is immune to disease. It is the blueberry variety Bluecrop that is the reference when creating any other.
  • Elizabeth. The berries of this variety ripen rather late, but they differ in their simply wonderful taste. It is Elizabeth's blueberries that are usually recommended to summer residents for growing on their plots as a dessert.
  • Patriot. This variety is good primarily for its high yield. Blueberry Patriot is tall and can produce up to 9 kg of fruit in one year.

Such varieties of this culture as Taiga Beauty, Canadian Nectar and Divnaya are excellent for the Urals and Siberia. All of these varieties are characterized by increased resistance to cold weather. The blueberry variety Blurey is also suitable for the northern regions of Russia.

Is it hard to grow a garden and vegetable garden?

No strength to eat store-bought tasteless vegetables and fruits
Therefore, we plan to buy our own house with a garden or cottage.

Also my grandmother (85 years old) runs to the dacha, but at least she needs to take a trolleybus 4 stops + 10 minutes. on foot. But it is purely an outlet for her. She hasn't had a husband for a long time. and for men's work she always had a niece and a son-in-law.

Of the pleasant things in the country I remember: grated frozen cherry-strawberries - the mother-in-law has 2 refrigerators, she can afford it. wonderful potatoes to taste. a neighbor's bathhouse, a swing for children, the opportunity for children to run around the site, you can put a children's pool, ride a bike. everything.

I have one apple-tree-white filling, one white currant bush and one gooseberry bush. I don't do anything with them, they grow and grow, by themselves. Sometimes, I cut dry branches. But this is not so for the harvest, self-indulgence :)

apples are already sick, there are also plums, cherries and other berry trees, here with them hemorrhoids
I have 2 cherries and 1 plum. I'm not doing anything. We were selected varieties of trees of small sizes. They are low. The harvest is enough to eat, nothing more. Everything is very delicious. The trees are 10 years old.
Our apple trees are also very small - Colon-shaped, but tasty and there are a lot of them. But apples of the middle lane, even in the refrigerator, lie only until November.

people begin to appreciate all these vegetables and fruits. They seem invaluable to them - so much health, so much effort invested that it would be an insult for them to refuse their natural apple with a worm or a crushed pear.

My parents kept apples and pears in a dug hole in the garden. They put them in boxes, put them in newspapers. It seems that they were stored until December-January, BUT these were some kind of winter varieties. Yes, and digging them out later is not a great pleasure :)

The author, for you yet.
Are you thinking of buying a house? Then get ready to redo it for yourself for a long time and persistently. (other people's smells are not "on the nose" for everyone)

Andryukha, have you already given seedlings to cherry? Do they really bear fruit normally?

For a week they have grown by 5 centimeters. Every day you have to turn it over, otherwise they reach for the sun.)

about! but the snow falls in November-December - the earth is freezing, how can you dig it out then? Scrap or something? (

In order for vegetables to grow in the middle lane, they need to be fertilized. Either with "chemistry" or manure or peat, otherwise they will not grow painfully! So that pests do not eat potatoes, currants, it also needs to be watered with "chemistry". Tomatoes, so that they do not bend from gray rot, also need to be processed with something. Well, and so on. Otherwise, everything will die out.

They are in the Stavropol Territory, like the author :) I honestly don't know how they dug, but not 2 meters deep, did they bury them? And I do not force you to do it, I just write what I know :)))

yes, I understand that you are not forcing me) your method interested me - so I think how to really fulfill it. But we are in the middle lane - in October, even frosts hit us in 2014 ((

We must keep pace with progress. - There are plastic cellars on sale, if you get down to business wisely, they can still be insulated with foam.

about! I have not heard of such - but we have dug our usual one for a long time.

Yes, in my opinion, the crop is stored in sawdust, no?

That year I froze all the berries (from the father-in-law) in bags, the currants and red and black currants and gooseberries "survived" best of all.

I am a city dweller, and I have always believed that the dacha-vegetable garden is not mine. Three years ago, a house with a garden was inherited, not far from the city. My husband likes to take care of the garden - well, I decided so, to plant a small vegetable garden at random - it will work out, it will not work out how it will work out. And, you know, it turned out that there is nothing particularly difficult in this. I did not plant on an industrial scale (especially there is nowhere to store) - but still it turned out a lot. It's cool, if "on the go", not particularly straining. Basically we have a rest - friends come to a barbecue, a husband and son go fishing, I like to read a book in the garden in the shade - it's beauty. The main thing, in my opinion, is not to bother with tons of crops.

for the first time I bought seedlings of tomato-cucumbers, last year I grew it myself - I read on the Internet how and what - everything worked out. Maybe because I'm not "shaking" over my garden. One of the problems - if you go on vacation for two weeks - you have to ask someone to come to water.

Yeah - it's great - to pick your own cucumber-carrot-zucchini - in the summer it's the most to nourish yourself with vitamins)

Let’s go to the next branch, kill the nationalist, who o-b / s / and / raves Russia and the Russians, despite the fact that she herself is from Russia, but lives in Sweden! This topic is on one of the first lines in popular topics.

Actually, I don't know about the garden, but those tomatoes and greens that I grow on the balcony every summer are enough for the season .. True, I have a large balcony.

I liked the ornamental tomatoes. Not cherry, but even less, on a branch of 8 pieces with a diameter of 1.5 - 2 cm. I don't know what they are called))) It's just beautiful and the smell from the tops is cool. They can also be grown on the balcony. They looked very nice in the marinade in jars red + yellow. There is also a vegetable garden (parents live in their house), but only 4 acres of free land. Half of them are lawn with flowers, half for edible. We like to study.

Let's see, I planted 3 different ones. Before that, they were just round, they grew about 6 * 6 cm. I wanted variety. The store ones are completely plastic, they are good at a price higher than meat tenderloin.

Guys, no one knows whether it makes sense to buy large-sized fruit trees? And then the site is like a parade ground, that year they planted a one-year-old apple tree. Not only did the aphids, the creature, overpowered, but also the ants. And she didn't grow much. And with sadness, I realized that from the little saplings that are sold everywhere, the garden will turn out in 10 years. If they survive, of course. And the shadows and kind of hotstsa are right now. Has anyone done this or is it stupid?

We planted 5-year-olds, they immediately bear fruit.

You have aphids, because ants. There are a lot of means for fighting ants, you can withdraw everything in a season. Fruit trees should be sprayed in the spring against aphids on bare trunks, then again before flowering, then in late autumn again on the head trunks.

I have a plot of 20 acres. in the first year I planted cucumbers, zucchini, tomatoes, all the greens, strawberries, and lettuce. Damn, how did I go. well, in fig. As a result, half of the greens did not sprout, only dill and parsley, cucumbers for the whole season, maybe a couple of buckets, a lot of tomatoes, but they did not turn red. pleased only with salad and zucchini. but from zucchini for the third time already sick. this year I will plant only dill, parsley and salad. Well, flowers, of course.

129, thank you for your answer, but would you recommend the most lethal ant ant remedy in your opinion? And then I boiled them all last summer with boiling water, where I found it, but there was nothing to do with it. And again, you can't pour boiling water under a tree, it can die.

To take care of the garden, you need to love to take care of plants. Start with indoor flowers. if you like it, then farming is yours)

They are all the same. I buy Anteater, it is in large packages, I have a large plot. It is necessary to sprinkle often and throughout the entire area, especially where there are anthills. You will see that the very next day there will be much less of them. The ants lick off the juice that the aphids leave, so they guard the aphid larvae. Read it on the Internet, it's interesting.

I am also that still a gardener, at home flowers did not grow at all, everyone died, only one palm tree was alive. I bought a hyacinth in Obi for 49 re and put the pot in a glass of water, the guys turned out to be such a miracle, and it bloomed exactly on another daughter. In general, now my hands are itching to do magic on the plot :-) Before that I planted zucchini (they always grow), I didn't even water it almost, radish (for me it was a discovery that it grows so quickly, 3 weeks in total, and this is Radish), well greens (never was normal) and flowers, of course, I like lilies and beautiful flowering begonias. Can anyone advise strawberries? We brought the last one from Finka, but she lived for exactly 3 years and was not very large, but I want a big and super sweet :-)

The author, do not flatter yourself. In order for something to grow in the garden without additional labor costs, you need: good soil, water (the sun itself) (Please note that in our country they like to collect free harvests in the fall)

This naivety amazes me too

Well I do not know. at the mother-in-law's dacha. all in full. vegetables, berries. once plucked weeds from strawberries. I had enough for an hour. they like it. and I do not understand this pleasure. I'd rather buy. albeit expensive farmers.

This naivety amazes me too

Tenants

About painful. Life in Khrushchev with inadequate neighbors

Self-leveling floor on the ceiling of the neighbors!

How to survive with such a neighbor?

Home shopping

in each topic so. You will write that you are aware of many little things and still some ***** will arrive and without reading all the messages will write some kind of stupidity. type naive author.

Labor on earth is hard for a person who is not used to physical exertion. I felt this for myself last year, having bought 20 acres of land and had never dealt with it before. But the main thing is that if you do not live in the country, but only come once a week, you are unlikely to be able to grow any significant crop. That is, in order for it to be expedient to deal with the harvest, it is necessary to work there every day, and also to protect it. For example, I did not recoup the trip to the dacha (gasoline) by what grew last year, grew potatoes, tomatoes, onions. There were few fruits, berries. They stole from us decently too. But I do not lose my optimism - if the war is over and I survive, I will try to finish building a house, I will live there in the summer, then I will be engaged in harvesting. The earth is hard, but such a joy when you have grown something yourself!

interesting) that I missed Temko)))
you know I will say one thing) it is possible and not difficult to work in the garden when it is well 3-4 hundred square meters) for a start, there is enough for a family) plant potatoes, well, a hundred square meters, and you will have enough of a young one to eat and save for the first time) plant a radish out of not expensive and simple just think about fertilizing!)
variety French breakfast and heat) tomatoes (buy 30 bushes of ready-made seedlings in May)
the variety who loves delicious then black
th prince cherry and katenka
cucumbers seeds are self-pollinating, including for boxes and all sorts of containers, the variety is Chinese long) it is put in the shade) such beauty))

mushroom zucchini (and small ones close in jars like cucumbers and caviar and salads and jam)
a couple of eggplant bushes) bushes 5 sweet peppers and a couple of bitters)
garden carrots and beets)
from beautiful patison bushes)
around the perimeter of sunflowers and beans)
onions only from a seedling in spring and not from seeds) well, a garden bed with salad and arugula) dill and parsley)
the main thing is not to fall on the beds) watering should be, and if not, then it is better not to plant)

but about the cost, I will say that it may be more expensive than buying, but you will have what you have grown and you know what and how! otherwise we have potatoes over there, which is not something that the collarade will fly there, and mosquitoes do not fly within a radius of a kilometer)))))))

Only for an amateur .. I ruined all the indoor flowers, I survived the most resistant to non-irrigation .. What the hell is a garden))
As I once said to my husband, I say let's go pick mushrooms, he was lying on the couch and answered why, I didn’t plant or water them and I won’t go to pick them ..
We are an extremely lazy family, we do not need a garden and a vegetable garden)

I have a garden my own house is difficult and pleasant. Now I eat green peas, raspberries and young carrots, delicious and from my garden. I made a salad for lunch, I just bought tomatoes and a salad, cucumbers and onions from the garden. I grow Victoria, raspberries, cherries, potatoes, green lettuce, peas, beets, carrots and cabbage, green onions. I'll plant more tomatoes. But the vegetables are natural, at least something natural.

the house is not far from the city 15-20 minutes from the city to their homes. There is a store nearby. Everything is fine, sometimes the dogs bark quietly and calmly. I have my own car

Parents have a dacha in the suburbs. In fact, with our climate, only zucchini and green onions can be grown. Agricultural labor is terrible, it is 100 times easier for me to go to work on weekends (I work in production, not in the office) and buy vegetables for 3 kopecks in a supermarket or go to a wholesale warehouse, although I am a person accustomed to heavy physical exertion, I consider this a mockery ...

It is necessary to use biofertilizers from chicken manure, then you can grow not only zucchini and onions. It is better to buy fertilizer that is already processed by manufacturers, and not from chickens. From chickens, if you use it, you can infect the soil with helminths, and if it is ready, then it does not infect the soil and there is no smell.

What i understood

Amateur gardening is not about profit and not about saving. Even if the harvest grows rich, the profit compared to buying the same vegetables and fruits will be not thousands, but hundreds of rubles.

In horticulture, the payback period is years. At the same time, the harvest strongly depends on a large number of "ifs": if the seedlings do not freeze, if the ovaries are pollinated, if the crop is not eaten by pests. This year, for example, two out of three cherries were gnawed by a dog, more than half of the strawberries were eaten by wasps, and part of the salad did not come up.

For me, gardening and horticulture is a pleasant pastime, and fresh vegetables are a useful bonus.

The wife forbade sending the article to her parents. In the article there are still no costs for transport (yourself to the site and harvest to the house). With them, the cost table will be even more obvious.

Anastasia, thanks for the article, especially for comparing the cost and prices of products in the store, but I will give my opinion. The more you know and are able to, the more you can save or earn. And without knowledge and skills, you have to spend money, as in any other field of activity.

1. Spending on inventory is not directly proportional to the number of acres. And for 4 ares, and 6 most likely it took the same amount of inventory.
2. It is not entirely clear why you bought a trimmer. If you only have a vegetable garden of 4 acres. You need a trimmer to mow the lawn, I understand you don't have it?
3. I stopped buying peat and fertile land (very often they sell waste soil from industrial greenhouses), because I think that there is no point in this. Instead, in the first year we bought sand (because we have heavy loam) and manure. Sand for loosening and improving the structure of the soil. Manure was introduced selectively and warm beds for cucumbers were organized, next year we disassemble the warm beds and bring rotted manure into the main garden. We buy manure in a year. We also constantly collect all bio waste in compost, even in winter (my husband takes it to the dacha on weekends). The next year, we plant pumpkins, zucchini and squash on compost heaps. After a year, we disassemble the beds and bring the earth into the main garden or greenhouses. You can search for ads for free manure removal, I have seen such ads. And also see the fields where cattle are grazed. Even in the Moscow region there are such fields and you can collect flat cakes for free. It is clear that you hardly collect on the beds, but soaking and watering is quite enough.
4. Grow seedlings only by yourself, and preferably from your own seeds. I always sow with a margin and a little earlier than the deadline, if the seeds do not come off, then I plant them again after 2 weeks. You can easily prepare seeds for cucumbers, peppers, tomatoes, beans, peas, dill, coriander, garlic and even lettuce.
5. Minimize the use of mineral fertilizers. For vegetables, I use only double superphosphate from mineral fertilizers 1-2 times per season, and even then not for all vegetables, mullein and herbal infusions are used as nitrogen fertilizers, and ash as potash fertilizers.
6. Communicate with neighbors and other amateur gardeners. I usually distribute the excess seedlings, but you can also sell them. They also give me something in gratitude. So I got free layering of strawberries, garlic, currants, gooseberries, raspberries, blackberries, felt cherries, plums, some flowers.
7. I don't buy seedling pots. I collect all winter from sour cream or coffee (I like it better), as well as cake lids. Some of the seedlings sit in them without a pick for planting in the ground.
8. Learned to plant trees. Now a completely different life has come. You can save on tree seedlings.

9. Potatoes for 100 rubles for planting is a divorce for money. We bought at one time from private traders for 30 rubles per kg.You can buy potatoes of different varieties on the market and taste the one you like best and plant. Just put it in advance for germination. Once we even planted potatoes from Egypt that were sold in Dixie. My grandmother had a couple of tubers lying around and sprouted. I have never seen such a yield on potatoes! We also take seeds from peppers (hot and regular), which are sold in the store. It sprouts well and is usually fruitful. these are industrial varieties! You can also buy a pack of dill at the pharmacy, which is much cheaper than buying a small pack at a garden store. But now he is sown all over the garden and now there are other problems.

Olga, I take two identical plastic cups or jars of sour cream, yogurt, etc. I make holes in one and insert into the second, without holes.
