Augustine grapes: history of cultivation, description and characteristics


Since ancient times, viticulture has been widespread in warm regions. Today, grape planting can be found even in the most northern regions. The choice among a huge variety of varieties sometimes baffles even experienced gardeners, because the tests of each achievement of selection take more than one year. There are varieties that are unassuming to care for, easy to reproduce, consistently pleasing with the harvest. Augustine is such a variety: it is grown for personal consumption, commercial purposes and for garden decoration.

The history of grape cultivation Augustine

The Augustine grape is actually a hybrid bred in Bulgaria by crossing Pleven and Villars Blanc. Pleven conveyed resistance to rot and fungal diseases, and Villard Blanc - resistance to bad weather. Despite its southern origin, Augustine grows well in Siberia and the Urals.

Description of the variety

Augustine is a table grape with an early ripening period of only 117 days. Already in mid or late August, the first fruits ripen, which without loss of quality can remain on the bush for up to two weeks. The weight of one bunch is 400 g, the bunches themselves are loose, conical in shape. The berries are elongated-oval, weighing up to 5 g. The taste of the grapes is simple, but sweet, marmalade even in a rainy summer. The color of the berries is white with an amber tint; in the sun the bunch glows elegantly from the inside. The dense skin protects well from wasps and other insects, but at the same time it is not felt when eating.

Other names of the variety are Augustine - V 25/20, Pleven resistant, Phenomenon.

The disadvantages of the variety are the presence of rather large seeds and cracking of the fruit after prolonged rains.

Characteristics of the variety

Augustine grape bushes are strong, strongly leafy, therefore thickened plantings are unacceptable. The variety is quite resistant to fungal diseases, mildew, powdery mildew. Frost resistance Augustine up to -22 °C, therefore, in northern latitudes, it must be sheltered, protecting it from low temperatures.

Despite the frost resistance of the variety, in the northern regions, the bushes need to be covered for the winter.

The yield of one bush reaches 50-60 kg, and with industrial cultivation - 120-140 kg / ha. The accumulation of sugar in fruits reaches 17–20%.

The flowers of the grapes are bisexual, pollination is very good regardless of the weather. Augustine can serve as a pollinator for other grape varieties growing nearby.

The grape bush Augustine is powerful, with great vigor of growth, beautifully braiding arches and arbors. Shoots ripen well. The vine is red-brown in color with freckles. The leaves are rounded, slightly dissected, dark green in color.

The transportability of the bunches is high. When overloaded, aging is delayed for 7–10 days, so normalization is necessary.

Features of planting and growing

Augustine is unpretentious in care, undemanding to food and stable harvest. Prefers moisture-rich chernozems or loams. Stagnation of groundwater is unacceptable. This variety is grown and propagated in several ways:

  • own-rooted seedlings;
  • grafted cuttings;
  • seeds;
  • layering from an adult bush.

Augustine seedlings are planted both in spring and autumn, they take root well, more than 90% of plantings are successful. But still it is necessary to follow the basic rules for planting grapes:

  1. Seedlings are chosen with a developed root system, the upper cut should be green.
  2. A sunny place protected from strong winds is suitable for planting.
  3. Pits 0.8 m deep and wide are prepared two weeks before planting, filled with two or three buckets of compost.
  4. The stalk is planted so that the upper peephole is above the soil surface, a support is driven in next to it. The distance between the shoots should be at least one and a half meters.

    Cuttings must be planted in a pit prepared in advance.

  5. A young plant does not need special care, only regular loosening of the soil and watering is needed.

Further care of Augustine grapes includes regular weeding, loosening, pinching, pruning, removing excess leaves, in case of drought - watering. In some cases, it is required to normalize the brushes so as not to harm the plant.

Augustine is a great variety, especially for beginners. Growth is strong, rooting is excellent, it is very rarely sick. With the minimum amount of effort invested, it gives the maximum return.
