Features of picking white cabbage

Seedlings of white cabbage can be grown in two ways - with a pick and without it. Choosing the first method for yourself, you need to take into account some of the subtleties of the procedure, without which there will not be a good harvest.

Why do you need a pick

Many gardeners grow white cabbage through seedlings. This is justified, since in most parts of our country the summer is relatively short, and frosts are frequent in spring. Seedlings, when directly sown in the ground, often die from unfavorable weather conditions, and late varieties, even if they survive in the spring, may not have time to ripen by autumn.

A strong beautiful head of cabbage is the pride of a gardener

To grow healthy cabbage seedlings, gardeners often use seedling picking. This method allows you to:

  • save space on the windowsills (the seeds are densely sown in one box, and after picking, the seedlings can be taken out to the greenhouse or greenhouse);
  • reject weak or diseased seedlings;
  • replace depleted soil with fertile soil;
  • provide seedlings with optimal lighting and space for good growth;
  • plant healthy, strong seedlings in open ground at a suitable time, without haste and fuss.

When to dive cabbage

Seedlings of white cabbage are very sensitive to the timing of the pick. Adapting to the new conditions, the cut seedlings will stop growing for about two weeks, and after that they will need time to grow and get stronger. Therefore, timely picking is the number one condition for obtaining a good harvest.

The optimal timing for picking early and mid-ripening varieties of white cabbage is on the 7-8th day after germination, for the late ones - on the 9-10th day. As a rule, by this time, the seedlings have 1–2 true leaves. It is important to pick before the 14-16th day, since after these periods the effectiveness of the event disappears and a good harvest, most likely, will not be obtained.

The best time for picking white cabbage seedlings is the appearance of two true leaves

Many gardeners, when working with seedlings, are guided by the lunar calendar. As experts assure, the phases of the moon affect all life processes of plants, therefore, sowing, planting, picking and other work is better planned, knowing which days are favorable for the desired procedure, and which are not.

Favorable days for picking seedlings in 2019 according to the lunar calendar:

  • February: 6-8, 16-17, 20-21;
  • March: 6-7, 15-16, 19-20;
  • April: 2-3, 11-12, 16-17, 29-30;
  • May: 1, 8-10, 13-14, 26-28.

How to dive cabbage seedlings correctly

You can dive cabbage seedlings into cups or pots with a capacity of 160-200 ml. The container with seedlings must be well watered the day before the pick - so the roots will practically not suffer during the operation.

Step-by-step process of picking white cabbage seedlings:

  1. Fill the pots with a nutrient mixture - ready-made soil for seedlings or soil of your own preparation.
  2. Make a hole in the soil with a wooden stick.
  3. Use the opposite end of a teaspoon or stick to pull the seedling out of the ground.

    If the seedlings are planted very densely, it is better to take them out in several pieces with a clod of earth.

  4. If the spine is very long, shorten it by 1/3.
  5. Gently lower the plant into the pot, dipping it to the cotyledonous leaves.
  6. Press the soil around the sprout.

    It is necessary to pick the cabbage very carefully, without damaging the delicate sprouts.

  7. Drizzle with water at room temperature.

In the first 2-3 days, the cut seedlings should be covered from the sun and the daytime temperature should be 12-14 aboutC, night - 10-11 aboutFROM.

Many gardeners dive cabbage seedlings directly into the greenhouse - it is easier to ensure the appropriate temperature regime. If there is no greenhouse, then you can easily make a greenhouse in the garden. For this, the prepared bed (fertilized and dug up in the fall) is covered with plastic wrap stretched over arcs. This must be done 3-4 days before the pick, so that the ground in the garden warms up. Before planting seedlings, the soil must be loosened. Then, just as in the case of the cups, they make depressions in the soil with a stick and then follow the already described scheme.

You can dive cabbage seedlings into a greenhouse or greenhouse, but the garden bed must be prepared in advance

When picking on a bed, maintain a distance of 5–6 cm from each other and 10 cm between rows.

I have been growing cabbage seedlings in a greenhouse for many years. It is very difficult to create suitable conditions for this cold-loving culture in an apartment, but in a vegetable garden it is quite possible. I have one small bed with slate sides, which every spring turns into a greenhouse for growing cabbage seedlings of all kinds and some flowers. In April, I cover the bed with plastic wrap, let the soil warm up - from two to five days, depending on the weather. Then I sow the seeds in rows, while occupying a small part of the garden, the other - most - remains free. Cabbage rises quickly, and when real leaves appear, I dive seedlings right there in the greenhouse, to an empty place. If the weather is warm and sunny, I replace the film with spunbond - so the seedlings will not overheat and get enough light, and the air humidity in such a greenhouse is moderate, which is what my seedlings need. Watering and hardening young plants is also very convenient - I lift one edge of the spanbond and do whatever is necessary. I have been using this method for a long time, and the cabbage seedlings always turn out to be strong and healthy and easily transfer the transplant to a permanent place. Frosts in such a greenhouse do no harm to either the cabbage or the flowers.

A competently carried out picking of white cabbage seedlings will increase the chances of getting a rich harvest. The main thing is not to miss the main points - the timing of the pick and the observance of the temperature regime for the seedlings.

Pickling cabbage seedlings in 2020: favorable days according to the lunar calendar

When to dive in 2020 seedlings, plants and flowers, the Growing phase is suitable for some, and the Decreasing phase is suitable for others, which all summer residents can learn about further.

Cabbage is a capricious and whimsical plant to care for. Any allowable error in growing leads to the fact that the growth of the plant slows down or stops altogether. To prevent this from happening, carefully observe the planting dates, the rules for deepening seeds, transplanting seedlings into open ground and further care.

Soil for picking

Seedlings can be transplanted into separate cups (paper, peat, plastic or plastic wrap), ready-made cassettes, nutritional cubes, wooden boxes, or direct planting in a greenhouse or greenhouse.

You can transplant seedlings into separate cups.

As for the land, its composition is somewhat different from that used for sowing, because seed germination does not require nutrition, but already forming plants must receive all the necessary micro and macro elements, and good air and moisture circulation is also important for the root system. Based on this, a mixture of garden soil, peat and some sawdust enriched with mineral fertilizers will be optimal. Sawdust is prepared as follows: 2 days before transplanting, 10 g of ammonium nitrate (incomplete matchbox) and 5 g of potassium nitrate diluted in water, as well as 12 g of granules of double superphosphate and 25 g of dry lime are added to a bucket of sawdust. After thorough mixing, the mixture is moistened and left for some time to fully dissolve and distribute the substances.

Soil for cabbage seedlings

The soil mixture for sowing cabbage for seedlings consists of equal parts of peat, turf soil and sand with the addition of wood ash (0.5 glasses of ash per 2 liters of soil mixture).

Soil preparation for sowing cabbage for seedlings.

Sift the resulting mixture and steam for an hour in a double boiler. After that, it is advisable to add perlite to the soil for sowing cabbage. It loosens the soil well, provides air access, absorbs excess moisture when watering, and then gradually releases it, which is very important for young seedlings.

If you have not steamed the soil mixture, then be sure to spill it with a fungicide solution (Maxim) or a pink solution of potassium permanganate.

Spilling the soil with potassium permanganate.

Place cabbage seeds before sowing for 20 minutes in a dark pink solution of potassium permanganate, then rinse them in clean water.

Treatment of seeds in a solution of potassium permanganate.

Also, for the prevention of blackleg, mold and other fungal diseases, you can use the drugs Maxim or Fitosporin according to the instructions.

After preventive treatment, lightly dry the cabbage seeds until they flow and spread them one by one on the soil surface according to the 1x1 centimeter scheme, since the seedlings do not tolerate thickening.

Label the varieties. Cover the seeds with potting soil 1-1.5 centimeters thick.

If cabbage seeds are not sealed deep enough, they often sprout in the skins. The seed coat is carried out with seedlings to the surface and interferes with the development of seedlings. Dampen the topsoil with a spray bottle.

Place the bowl in a plastic bag and keep the sowing until germination at a temperature of about + 20 ° C.

Caring for cabbage after picking

To make the seedlings easier to transfer and take root faster, it is necessary to create comfortable conditions for them.

The biostimulator Epin Extra helps me to quickly restore drooping plants. Spraying with a solution (3 drops 100 ml) I spend 6 hours after transplanting.

The use of Epin Extra promotes the rapid recovery of plants damaged during transplantation and their accelerated growth.

Temperature and light conditions

The first 2-3 days after the pick, the temperature in the room should be increased to + 18–20 ° С, then the temperature regime that is optimal for cabbage seedlings should be maintained: + 14–16 ° С during the day, + 10–12 ° С at night - then it will grow strong and hardy.

Plants need to be provided with good lighting, but protected from direct sunlight. If there is a lack of light, in order to avoid stretching the seedlings, it is necessary to use additional illumination with fluorescent lamps.

Seedlings of cabbage need to provide good lighting.

Moisture-loving cabbage should be watered regularly, not allowing the soil to dry out. The water should be separated, at room temperature. However, moisture stagnation in the soil should be avoided, which can lead to black stalk and root rot. In indoor conditions with low air humidity, it is useful to spray plants.

You can moisten the cabbage with a sprayer, spraying water over the leaves.

Top dressing of seedlings

The first 7 days after picking the seedlings grow very slowly, then their growth becomes intense. The seedlings that have taken root need a balanced diet, therefore, a week after transplanting, they should be fed with nitrogen fertilizer - ammonium nitrate solution (5 g / 1 l) or mullein solution (1:10). Before transplanting into open ground, one more top dressing is carried out (5 g of Nitrofoski / 1 l or 20 g of Effekton / 1 l).

A week after planting cabbage, fertilizing watering is carried out

I feed cabbage seedlings with a complex fertilizer Krepysh, which contains a set of macro- and microelements necessary for obtaining developed and healthy seedlings. I add the nutrient solution (5 g / 5 l) when watering or spraying.

Complex fertilizer Krepysh, enriched with microelements, was specially developed for the successful cultivation of seedlings

Hardening cabbage

So that the seedlings planted in the garden do not dry out in the heat or freeze during a cold snap, it must be tempered. They begin to harden a week before transplanting to the site. First, the vents are opened briefly, then the containers with plants are placed on an unheated veranda or loggia, gradually increasing the time spent in the cold. Then, in the afternoon, the seedlings are left in the open air, bringing them indoors at night. Before planting, cabbage is taken out into the garden for a day. After hardening, the seedlings become more viable, easily tolerating drought and bad weather.

Before being transplanted into the ground, cabbage is taken out for hardening in fresh air.

Some novice gardeners are wary of picking cabbage, and in vain. Indeed, soon after germination, the seedlings, growing, begin to crowd in and take away light and nutrition from each other, which leads to their slowed down development. Transplanting them into a large container with renewed soil will help to grow strong and viable seedlings. However, it should be remembered that only a correct and timely picking will bring benefit.
