What exotic fruits can be grown from the seed right at home

Growing exotic plants at home is a snap. When we buy fruit, we simultaneously receive free planting material from which a young fruit-bearing tree can grow.

Citrus

In addition to the usual oranges, tangerines and lemons, you can grow other citrus fruits at home:

  • grapefruit;
  • lime;
  • pomelo;
  • clementine;
  • kumquat;
  • limequat - a hybrid of kumquat and lime;
  • orangevate - a hybrid of kumquat and tangerine;
  • calamondin.

Citrus seeds germinate and develop very quickly. They are available for planting all year round. Plants bear fruit well, but the first fruits appear after a few years. Even without them, the tree pleases with its excellent appearance, cleans and flavors the air in the apartment well. Citrus seeds, especially hybrid varieties, do not retain varietal qualities. Therefore, if the purpose of planting is to obtain fruits, it is better to use cuttings. To grow a plant from a seed, the planting material is washed in warm water, dried and planted in a small pot with nutritious soil. The container is covered with a glass jar or plastic bag. Such a greenhouse can maintain temperature conditions and retain moisture on the soil surface. The first shoots appear after 3-4 weeks.

Persimmon

It is quite difficult to grow an exotic tree from a bone. For planting, you need to use only fully ripe seeds from ripe persimmons. Unripe fruits are sold in stores. To bring them to ripeness, persimmons are placed in a bag along with a banana or apple, which release ethylene, which accelerates ripening. The seeds are soaked for 48 hours in a pale pink solution of potassium permanganate. Then they are washed and kept at a temperature of at least 50 ° C for two months. Before planting, the hard ribs are removed from the seeds using sandpaper and planted in a mixture of peat and coarse sand. Persimmon is a deciduous plant, so in winter, when the dormant period begins, it will need a cool room. With the right content, the first fruits will appear in 5 to 7 years.

Date tree

Even a novice florist can grow this unpretentious plant. The date palm is fast growing, and after 5 years it forms a full-fledged plant. At home, the palm tree does not bear fruit, so you should not wait for fruit. For germination, you can use seeds from fresh or dry fruits. During drying, they do not undergo heat treatment, so they germinate rather quickly.Before planting, the seeds are cleaned of pulp and placed in a container with warm water for two days. Then they are planted vertically in moistened soil. After 15 - 20 days, the first shoots appear. Dates require moderate watering. The plant does not tolerate transplanting well. In order not to damage the root system, it is planted immediately in a large pot.

Mango

Mango, or "great fruit" has not been considered exotic for a long time. It is successfully grown at home on a windowsill. The fruit has a very large seed, so germinating it is not an easy task. Seeds only from ripe fruits are suitable for planting. If the pulp separates easily, then the seeds can be planted. Before planting, it is thoroughly washed, the remnants of the pulp are removed with a knife and chopped. Inside it is an embryo with a sprout. If this is not possible, it is kept in a container with water for 10-14 days or wrapped in a damp cloth. It is important not to dry out. The seed is planted in moist soil so that 1/4 of the seed remains on the surface. The container is covered with foil and placed in a warm place. Mango does not tolerate low temperatures. Once every 2-3 days, the container is slightly opened for ventilation.

Feijoa

Growing a plant from a seed does not cause any particular difficulties. To preserve varietal characteristics, it is advisable to propagate feijoa by cuttings. Before planting, the seeds are cleaned of pulp, disinfected in a weak solution of potassium permanganate and planted in plastic cups filled with a mixture of sand, leafy soil and peat. The optimal time for germination is the end of winter - the beginning of spring. The surface of the soil is moistened with a spray bottle. The first shoots appear in 3 - 4 weeks. In case of a lack of light, the seedlings are illuminated with a fluorescent lamp. After the appearance of real leaves, the shoots are planted in separate pots. In summer, grown plants can be exposed to the open air, taking care of protection from drafts and direct sunlight. Feijoa does not tolerate dry air, so it is systematically sprayed. In order for the plant to begin bearing fruit, two bushes should be grown for pollination.

Fig tree

Fig tree seeds, or figs, are small in size. Therefore, before planting, they are washed, mixed with sand and sown on the surface of the soil. The containers are covered with foil or a piece of glass to create a greenhouse effect. The first sprouts will hatch after 20 days. Before they appear, the soil is moistened and aired. With proper care, the plant begins to bear fruit in 3 to 4 years.

Passion fruit

Passion fruit, or passionflower, is a widespread houseplant with edible fruits. It requires a bright, well-ventilated room and humid air. Passionflower requires a lot of space as the vine grows rapidly, and passionfruit seeds are sown in early spring. For planting, seeds from ripe fruits are suitable. They are thoroughly washed with water and dried in a dark place. For sowing, a soil mixture consisting of equal parts of sod land, compost and sand is used. Planting is carried out in shallow grooves at a distance of 5-7 cm from each other. As the soil dries up, the soil surface is moistened. The first fruits appear 2-3 years after germination.

Affordable exotic: what exotic plants can be grown at home from seeds

My passion for houseplants began as a child. At first, I carried home everything I could get my hands on. Sources of replenishment of my collection were school window sills, gifts from friends, I bought some of the plants in the flowers with the pocket money I saved. And what I just didn’t have! True, not all plants managed to find a common language.

There are many exotic plants that can be grown at home.

Gradually, with experience, I got my favorites. Fragrant plants, forest cacti and indoor fruit exotics became the basis of my collection. Most of the plants currently in my collection are grown from seeds or tiny cuttings. I bought some, some of the seeds I brought from overseas trips, but I have some wonderful plants grown from seeds obtained from store fruits.

Many are sure that nothing good can come of such crops, and this statement is true for the same seedlings of apple trees, pears or citrus fruits. From such plants, wilds are obtained, suitable only as a rootstock for cultivated varieties (and even then not all, from mandarin, for example, and the rootstock is useless).

Not all "shop exotics" adapt well to room conditions. So, for example, successful experiments in growing coconut or lychee at home are extremely rare; problems with these plants arise even among very experienced flower growers. But this is not a reason to give up attempts to arrange a home botanical garden from the seeds of shop exotic, especially since this is often the only way to acquire a rare fruit plant.

Quite a lot of "vegetable" plants thrive in indoor conditions, and some can even bloom and bear fruit, without requiring complex care and unique gardening skills from the owner. Here, in my opinion, are the best "shop exotics" for the home.

What exotic plants can be grown in Ukraine?

Now many summer residents do not want to grow only potatoes, cabbage, tomatoes and cucumbers in their gardens. They are interested in creating "tropics" or "alps" with their own hands, cultivating exotic plants. Experts say that subtropical plants from the pumpkin family take root best in our area. What do these cultures prefer?

Looking to grow a watermelon pumpkin?

At their summer cottage, you can grow a lot of pumpkin plants that come from the Mediterranean, India, America and Africa.

Cyclanter has medium-sized (5-8 cm) fruits, which are used for frying and stuffing at a young age. They taste like asparagus. Fruits that are empty inside can be stuffed with meat, rice or cooked as a separate dish. Before ripening fruits cyclanters are covered with an airtight thick wax coating. They, like in a thermos, are able to preserve the contents of the pumpkin for almost a whole year.

Benincasa (candy gourd) suitable for soups, stews and caviar. Cut into small pieces and candied fruits can be eaten like candy.

Kavbuz - the largest berry in the world, its weight is usually 10-12 kg. It is a hybrid of pumpkin and watermelon. From the "mom" - pumpkin - she got the orange color of the pulp, and from the "dad" - watermelon - aroma, juiciness and sweetness. Of kavbuza prepare soups, cereals, pancakes and mashed potatoes.

Melotria otherwise called striped mini cucumber. Its fruits are very decorative and tasty. They are used in salads when they are very young. Later, the skin of the fruit of melotria becomes tough. At this stage, they can be pickled, salted and stewed.

Momordica is a liana with small carved leaves and large white, yellow or pink flowers. But its bright red fruits are especially decorative, which do not unfold, but burst. Momordica also appreciated as a medicinal plant. It helps with joint diseases, hypertension, diabetes and other diseases.

Ficifolia (fig-leaved pumpkin) is a perennial liana that grows incredibly quickly up to 15-20 m in length. Fitsifolia is capable of braiding and is the best fit for gazebos, arches and hedges. It is also very fruitful. The fruits of this vine have the highest keeping quality - they are kept fresh for up to four years. For food, young ovaries are used as zucchini, and adults are used for compote.

Tladiant has fruits similar to cucumbers, up to 10 cm long, green, with darker stripes. When ripe, they turn red with orange stripes and dark orange flesh. The fruit tastes sweet. Jam and jams are made from them.

Seeds are sown in June

All these rarities, surprisingly, easily take root in the dacha plots of Ukrainians. It is best to plant them through seedlings, sowing one or two seeds in mid-April in separate pots with a capacity of 300 cubic meters. see Seedlings are planted in a permanent place in the garden in May. But even in May and early June, it is not too late to sow seeds in open ground.

In the future, the agricultural technology of exotic pumpkin crops is no different from the agricultural technology of ordinary cucumbers and pumpkins. During drought, these plants need to be watered regularly and abundantly, and also twice a month to give them liquid fertilizing with phosphorus and potassium fertilizers.

In addition, one more important point should be taken into account. When a pumpkin vine is grown on a support, its crown should not be thickened. The plant must be given enough light, then it will bloom and bear fruit well.

To do this, only a few main shoots are left on the bushes and all unnecessary stepsons are removed.

Considering these nuances of agricultural technology, you can easily grow a refrigerator pumpkin, watermelon pumpkin and other exotic vegetable plants.

First, you need to study the details of the conditions necessary for the success of the enterprise. Growing a mango from a seed is not as difficult as inexperienced growers believe, but you need to create conditions similar to tropical countries.

If there is a greenhouse or winter garden in a private house, then it is much easier to expect the appearance of exotic fruits: the conditions will be just perfect. A city apartment also has a high chance of success. It is great if the house is warm and it is possible to heat the house with an air conditioner or heater in the off-season, while there is no central heating.

The process of preparing the seed takes a lot of time, you should not wait for the first shoots in a week. Despite this fact, growing mangoes at home is an exciting experience, and the result is often pleasing to fans of exotic fruits.

Preparation of the bone

Important points:

  • select a ripe mango, wash, gently cut in half, remove the pit
  • check the condition of the base. In the absence of damage, wormholes, putrefactive zones, thoroughly wash the surface
  • take a sharp knife, carefully remove the pulp particles, split the bone: this way sprouts will appear sooner
  • remove the shell, take out the bean-like core. An obligatory step is the treatment of the inner part of the bone with antifungal agents - fungicides
  • sometimes there are several "beans" inside the seed. To grow mangoes in a flowerpot, you need to choose the lightest and most flavorful cotyledon
  • the next step is to soak the base for the mango. Lukewarm water is poured into a glass jar, the "bean" is placed, placed in a lighted place. Every two days, replace the water: the old one is drained, the liquid is added at room temperature. Do not be lazy: untimely renewal of water in the bank will lead to turbidity of the liquid, moldy base for the future tree
  • the duration of the soaking phase is 3-4 weeks.

How to germinate a mango seed? You need to be patient, follow all the recommendations. You can not keep the cotyledon in hot water: instead of rapid swelling and proper preparation, the base may rot.

Soil preparation

Shortly before the end of the previous period, they prepare the soil and flowerpot, choose a suitable place for an exotic plant. It is important to follow the recommendations, otherwise it will be difficult to wait for the sprouts.

How to proceed:

  • a universal soil with a neutral pH level - the best option for growing mango at home. In flower shops and salons "Everything for gardeners" there are many mixtures of various weights. The amount of soil is moderate: calculation for a flowerpot with a diameter of 20 to 30 cm and a height of up to 35 cm
  • after purchasing the soil mixture, the material is brought home, scattered on clean paper or film, and the quality of the substrate is checked. In most cases, good soil is sold in specialized stores, but sometimes insect larvae, worms, and incomprehensible inclusions are visible in the soil mixture. In this case, you need to replace the spoiled substrate with high-quality soil and not risk the state of the plant.
  • drainage is arranged at the bottom of the flower pot. Small crushed stone, pebbles, expanded clay, pieces of brick (small) create an environment for the passage of moisture, removing excess liquid not absorbed by the roots.

Landing rules

After preparing the soil, creating a drainage layer, a swollen bone is planted. If a sprout has already appeared, then a large seed is placed horizontally, if you can distinguish the tops and the bottom, then sideways.

Other rules:

  • It is not necessary to completely cover the cotyledon with soil: the bone should look out of the ground by a quarter
  • water the soil a little, wait for the soil to sit down, add a little more substrate if necessary
  • it remains to equip a mini-greenhouse over a flowerpot: cover the pot with a mango seed planted with transparent material: a third part of a plastic bottle with a bottom, glass or film
  • it remains to put the prepared container on the window, where there is a lot of light. If planting is carried out in winter, then additional lighting will be needed.

Growing tropical plants from seeds at home

An indoor garden can be a lot of joy, especially if there is no large area with fruit trees, a berry or a vineyard. And even if there is, the main work in it has already been completed by November. Cold months are ahead, when indoor plants become the only joy for the gardener. You can grow figs, citrus trees, dwarf pomegranate. And you can try to plant something completely exotic that does not grow in our latitudes.

Mastering the agricultural technology of growing tropical fruit plants is one of the most exciting things to do in the winter months. Finding material for sowing is not a problem today: many types of exotic fruits are sold in supermarkets. Taste them and use the seeds to create a garden of paradise on the windowsill. For success, you need to follow two rules: firstly, buy ripe fruit, and secondly, learn about the agricultural technology of growing your chosen exotic.

So what kind of tropical plants can you grow at home from seeds yourself?

The fruits of this evergreen beauty from South America are edible whole, including the crunchy seeds. However, if you plant them, there is a chance that you will have a vine, and someday you will admire its luxurious flowering without leaving your home.

Just do not forget to provide her with bright light and fresh air, warmth, space, high humidity and "enhanced" nutrition.

Since then, has lychee been considered one of the most problematic candidates for growing from a bone at home? But this is true if only because the "Chinese plum" is one of those rare plants that require mycorrhiza. Otherwise, this is a very cute creature with narrow pinkish leaves.

Coffee tree

What else can be grown from seeds? A lot of things, there would be materials and a place for the experimentarium! For example, our colleagues successfully grow kiwi, medlar and even pepino from seeds. And soon you will find out what happens when you plant avocado and pomegranate seeds.

Growing seedlings is exciting, sometimes too much.

But over time, you realize that this is a rewarding job - for patient, caring and responsible "testers". Eating fruit, planting seeds and waiting for the sprouts - this is so, the bouquet-candy period. But then the fun begins. After all, the fruits of labor will have to wait for years. And in the literal sense, you can not wait for the fruit at all (in the case of avocado and date palm, that's right). At the same time, care for the pet - watering, feeding, light and thermal conditions - has not been canceled. The main thing is to remember that we are responsible for everyone who was put in a pot of soil and forced to sprout from the seeds. And if difficulties do not frighten you, - good seedlings and generous harvests!

Have you tried growing something from a seed? Let's share our experience!
