Proper cultivation of leeks outdoors

Many salads wouldn't taste as thin without an ingredient like leeks. Due to its excellent gastronomic qualities and rich vitamin composition, the plant is grown by many gardeners. An annual culture native to the Mediterranean, it has unusual greenish-blue feathers with a characteristic aroma. The lack of pungency and a sweetish taste make the variety an aromatic spice.

When to plant leeks

Due to the long growing season (about six months) and the peculiarities of the climate of central Russia, it is better to grow leeks using seedlings. It is sown in the second half of February or early March in prepared boxes, pots or cups.

To obtain seedlings, irrigation and temperature conditions must be observed. If you sow seeds in open ground, you may not wait for the harvest due to the death of the plant due to frost and snow (the danger of freezing exists both in spring and autumn). Some gardeners practice the cultivation of leeks for greens, which are harvested in July.

One way to plant onions is by sowing seeds in late fall (usually November). It is important to make sure that the weather forecasts are not warm, this will provoke quick shoots.

Seeding in the beds can be done in greenhouse conditions or with the use of cultivation technology under agrofibre.

Proper soil and seed preparation

Used to plant seeds a mixture of sod and compost soil with the addition of humus... Leek loves nutritious and light soil; in a dense substrate, seeds may not sprout.

When using a peat base, you should not forget to feed with any additives:

  • dolomite flour;
  • urea;
  • double superphosphate;
  • potassium sulfate.

Spring sowing is usually done in March to get the onions by September. The timing and scheme of planting and sowing can be adjusted depending on the time of harvest.

How to plant seeds

Before planting, seeds soaked at home in water at room temperature and kept for a day, after which they are dried.

Another preparation option involves keeping the seeds in a thermos with water (40 degrees) for 2-4 hours followed by rinsing under a cool shower and drying. Boxes 35 x 50 cm are used as containers.

The seed consumption for such a container is 2-3 grams... After filling the container, the soil surface is covered with a 3-5 mm layer of sand and moistened.

Before shoots appear, the box must be covered with glass or foil to create a greenhouse effect.

To obtain good germination of planting, it is necessary to create favorable conditions. Among the main ones:

  • correct temperature regime within 22 degrees before germination;
  • temperature adjustment after germination (in the daytime up to 18-20 degrees, at night up to 8-14 degrees);
  • watering to carry out heated water;
  • provide good illumination for photosynthesis.

Picking and hardening

It is better to grow seedlings of culture without picking, do not need to be seated in separate containers. Seedlings will be ready for planting in open ground after reaching the age of 2-2.5 months.

For 6-7 weeks after the emergence of shoots, seedlings need temper... To do this, boxes or pots should be taken outside and left in partial shade for several hours, gradually increasing the time spent in the air. In strong winds, air procedures are not recommended.

Planting onion seedlings in open ground

Seedlings are planted in open ground in the first half of May, for example, this applies to the Moscow region. Before an important step, it is necessary to thoroughly moisten the soil so as not to damage the root system of the plant. It is better to do the work in the evening or in cloudy weather. Active sun can destroy young shoots.

The leek bed is chosen in open areas so that it can grow with maximum access to light. It is not recommended to plant a crop near bushes and trees.

The soil for planting must be neutral reaction, rather loose... If the soil is acidified, it must be preliminarily limed.

It is advisable to start preparing the beds in the fall. To do this, the site is dug up and cleaned of roots and weeds, after which processed by Nitrofoskoy (2 tbsp. L. Per 1 m2). In early spring, the beds are enriched with humus and compost without additional digging of the earth.

When the seedlings are ready to be transplanted, the grooves are prepared in the selected area. Their depth is 10-15 cm, interval - 25-30 cm... A distance of 10-20 cm is maintained between the shoots, depending on the variety.

Each root, before immersion in the ground, is treated with a special chatter, which is prepared from clay, manure and water (all components are taken in equal proportions). Too long shoots shortened to 4 cm... Seedlings are sprinkled with soil in small quantities. Transplanting work ends with abundant watering.

Leek care after transplant

Leeks are not very whimsical to care for, but you will need to make an effort to get a harvest. To grow a good crop that will not be afraid of transportation and will grow healthy, you need to care for it properly.

Care includes:

  • regular watering;
  • weeding;
  • hilling (3-4 times during the growing season);
  • groundbait;
  • loosening;
  • treatment against diseases and pests.

After transplanting seedlings, the plant is not watered for three days.

Further, the shoots need to be watered with non-cold water. 1 time in 5 days... The irrigation rate is up to 10-15 liters of settled water per 1 m2.

During the season, leeks are fed 3-4 times... The plant responds well to organic fertilizers: mullein, compost, bird droppings. Mineral complexes rich in potassium, phosphorus and other micro and macro elements are also suitable. Each hilling is recommended to be combined with the introduction of ash.

Every 2 weeks it is necessary to loosen the soil around the shoots until the stem becomes as thick as a pencil. Further, the procedures become more frequent and widen into the groove zone to saturate the soil with oxygen and prevent soil compaction.

Harvesting and storage

You can collect onions until late autumn, but it is better to do this before frost and the first snow.

The plant should be cleaned of damaged and dried leaves, remove the tops of the feathers (about 1/3 of the length), cut at the root by 1 cm.

The crop is well preserved in the refrigerator, wrapped in cling film. Before packing, the stems must be cooled so that condensation does not form under the polyethylene. Basements, cellars or pits with a temperature regime of no higher than 2-5 degrees are also suitable as storage facilities.

For preparations for the winter, the leek is placed in the freezer. After thawing, it retains its properties and is quite usable.

Leeks are still gaining popularity among Russian gardeners. It is very interesting and useful to gain invaluable experience in growing a crop and share it with summer residents, as well as to boast of a magnificent harvest, which may look unusual.

Watering onions in the open field

Today I decided to touch on watering onions in the open field in my article. After all, it is the watering of onions that is the key to the formation of large bulbs and a good yield of onions in general. Previously, when growing onions in the fields, watering was practically not used. Thanks to special preparation and cultivation of the soil, special attachments for agricultural machinery, it is possible to preserve moisture in the soil. Due to this, natural watering with rain does the job. Now almost all farms use drip irrigation of onions. But all this is good, just not for amateur gardeners like me. Many techniques are simply not available to us. In this connection, I want to tell you how to properly water the onion with water. I will also share my experience of how often to water onions in the open field and how you can water onions for the prevention of diseases. If you are interested, you can also read how to water green onions. And so, let's get started ...

How leeks multiply

Leeks are propagated by seed. Both seedling and non-seedling methods are used. Most gardeners prefer to grow seedlings at home first, and only then plant the plants in the beds.

The advantages of growing leeks by seedling method:

  1. Saving planting material. The seedling method allows you to do without thinning the seedlings, since already formed plants are planted on the beds. In this case, they immediately use the correct landing pattern.
  2. Early harvests. You can grow seedlings before it gets warmer outside. By the time of transplantation into the garden, the plants will already be strong and mature. This will allow harvesting even late varieties.
  3. The possibility of growing in the northern part of the country. Fortified plants tolerate cold snaps better, while seeds in such conditions may simply not germinate.

Seedlings are grown at home on a windowsill or in a greenhouse. In the second case, it is easier to create suitable conditions.

You can grow and get a harvest of leeks at home. The plant is cultivated in large boxes on a windowsill or balcony.

Growing leeks in a seedless way is also possible. This is a less economical method, as the seedlings will have to be thinned out. To protect crops and immature plants from adverse environmental conditions, use a greenhouse. The method is suitable for regions with warm climates.

Leaves and a false stem of the leek are obtained in a year. It will be possible to collect the planting material only next year.

Growing features

To obtain an excellent harvest of this crop, it is necessary to adhere to all stages of cultivation. Particularly important steps in this situation will be the preparation of seeds, which must be treated and disinfected.

To increase the germination of planting material, you can put a thin layer of snow on the ground before sowing it. Its thickness should not exceed 2 cm. Snow should be pressed to the ground with a paint roller. Sowing should be done very quickly after that. Then, after the snow has been absorbed into the soil, it is recommended to sprinkle the beds from above with a thin layer (no more than 1 cm) of dry soil. Then the planting of seedlings is carried out according to the usual scheme.

After planting seedlings in open ground, to save space, you can grow onions, beets, as well as carrots, celery or strawberries between the leek beds.

Winter (late) varieties of this onion are recommended to be grown in a greenhouse. This is due to the fact that they have a fairly long growing season. In this regard, when grown in open ground, they do not have time to completely finish their growth. If such varieties were nevertheless planted in open ground, then with the onset of cold weather the plants are transplanted into boxes and placed in a warm room. Such a transplant is carried out in the fall before the onset of frost.

Since leeks are considered a cold-resistant plant, adult plants (early and middle varieties) are able to withstand frosts of -5 ... -7 ° C. Therefore, in areas with a mild climate, they can even winter in the open field under a snow cover.

Growing at home

Leeks can be grown at home all year round. To get a good harvest, two important conditions must be observed:

  • provide the place where the onion grows with artificial lighting using phyto-lamps, so that the daylight hours are 10-12 hours
  • provide a temperature regime from +17 to +24 ° С.

If the windows keep the cold out, leeks can be grown on the windowsill all year round.

During the period of plant growth, it is periodically necessary to cut off the tops by a third so that the height of the leaves does not exceed 10 cm in order to thicken the stem.

By following these rules, you will harvest every three to four months.

Harvesting and storage

It is advisable not to pluck the leaves from leeks intended for long-term storage during growth. Harvest ripe onions before the temperature drops to -5 ° C. Dig up the plants, dry them a little, remove the clods of earth with your hands, while trying to prevent the soil from contaminating the green part.

Trim the roots, leaving 1 /3... The leaves can also be trimmed, but for long storage it is best to leave them long. Next, remove the onion for the winter, sorting out all damaged and diseased or pest-affected specimens.

There are several ways to store leeks:

  1. Storage in a box (bucket) with sand. Preliminary 30-40 minutes. calcine the sand in the oven at 200 ° C. Before laying the vegetable, slightly moisten the sand, but do not allow it to become wet. Pour 5-7 cm of sand into a box, place the leek stalks vertically. Add more sand, covering the entire white part of the stem. Cover with a lid, put in a cool (about 0 ° C) and humid (80-85%) place - basement, cellar. If the leek will be stored on the balcony, cover it with a cotton blanket.
  2. In a trench in an elevated position. Dig a trench 6-7 cm wide, put leeks in it, sprinkle with earth, cover with boards, leaving small holes. In rain and frost, cover the top with foil.
  3. In the pit. Dig a hole to hold the entire bow upright. Load the leek, sprinkle with earth. In the cold, close the top with dry leaves. It is advisable to put coniferous branches in the pit to scare away rodents.
  4. Greenhouse. You can put the structure right above the leek beds. It is better to dig it up beforehand and shorten the roots, this will stop growth, preserve the taste. You need to dig the onion into the ground halfway, collect the greenhouse on top. The temperature inside must be at least 0 ° C.
  5. Chilled or frozen. Rinse whole leeks, dry, cut, put in a bag, fill with air, close. The shelf life is 1 month. To freeze leeks for the winter, they also need to be washed and dried, chopped, portioned, and frozen.
  6. Drying onions. Rinse the vegetable, dry it, cut it, leave it for several days at room temperature. It is advisable to cover the top with gauze. Can be oven dried for 15 minutes. at 100 ° C. Store this onion tightly sealed in a cool, dry place.

If all the rules for growing and caring are followed, leeks give high yields. A variety of varieties and many ways to preserve the harvested crop allow you to enrich your diet with tasty and healthy vegetables throughout the year. When using it, you must remember that there are contraindications to its use.
